Evaluation of a Board in the sustainability sector supports them to optimise their effectiveness.

Category: Learning & Evaluation

Challenge
In accordance with Victorian Public Sector Commission (VPSC) requirements, all public entity Boards must undertake regular performance evaluations to ensure they are meeting their responsibilities and to identify opportunities for improvement or reform.

In 2024, a sustainability focussed statutory authority within the Victorian Public Service, engaged Zing & Co to conduct a performance evaluation of their Board and support the Board to identify and act on opportunities to improve their effectiveness.
What Zing & Co did

Working in partnership with the organisations, Zing & Co designed an evaluation process in line with the VPSC guidelines for Board and Director Performance (the ‘guidelines’) which included:

  • Administration of an evaluation questionnaire for all Board and Executive members, covering the key areas outlined in Section 7 of the guidelines and utilising the corresponding VPSC Board Performance Survey template.

  • Interviews with a sample group of Board members and the Executive team.

  • A comprehensive review of all relevant documentation including data generated through Board Offsites undertaken in the previous 2 years.

  • Detailed analysis of all data collected.

  • Preparation of a report that presented an assessment of the effectiveness of the Board and its committees to identify the strengths as well as opportunities to improve governance, decision-making, strategy, and relationships with executive management.

  • Facilitated a group assessment and reflection to debate and encourage discussion regarding the findings and proposed actions.

What you can learn from this organisation

Reflecting on the performance of the Board enabled the Directors to identify new opportunities to support the organisation’s ambitious strategic agenda

Assessing the performance of Boards and Directors helps to maintain a Board’s integrity and encourages:

  • Collaborative decision making among Directors

  • Individual high performance

  • Directors owning and leading a culture of good governance.
