Non-for-profit poised for growth needed to be selective to be sustainable.

Client: Kids First Australia

Challenge:
Following its merger with Whitelion, Kids First Australia (KFA) transformed from a single-state provider into a national human services organisation operating across four Australian states.

The opportunity was significant: to extend high-quality support to many more vulnerable children and families. But growth was never the objective in itself. The Executive and Board were clear that expansion should only occur where KFA could genuinely deliver the best outcomes for families, rather than competing where other organisations were better placed to serve. They needed an evidence-based growth strategy that would guide investment decisions with confidence and remain relevant long after the merger.
Shift achieved:

Rather than pursuing growth for its own sake, KFA gained confidence to invest where it could make the greatest difference. They achieved this through partnership with Zing & Co that saw us develop three key artifacts: a compelling value proposition, a practical decision-making tool to consistently assess future growth opportunities, and a plan focused on sustainable expansion.

Zing & Co’s work triangulated rigorous data analysis with 1:1 stakeholder engagement to ground decisions in statistics and lived experience. We analysed demographic trends, service demand and government policy across Australia; engaged key stakeholders in all eight states and territories; and facilitated the Executive and Board to translate this evidence into clear strategic choices.

Reflection:

A strategic plan provides direction. A clear value proposition and disciplined decision-making framework provide something even more valuable and enduring: the confidence to navigate change, evaluate opportunities consistently, and grow without compromising purpose.
