Leadership network events designed to connect, align and build capability enable a local council to deliver an ambitious agenda.

Challenge
Brimbank City Council is responsible for managing local issues and planning for the community needs of a large, culturally diverse population in Melbourne's west. In late 2021, a new CEO was appointed and commenced work to develop a new, ambitious organisational vision and strategy to respond to the changing environment and deliver great outcomes for the local community.

To deliver this ambitious strategy, the leadership cohort needed to be engaged, connected, aligned, empowered and have the capability required to lead change across the workforce.
What Zing & Co did

In early 2022, Zing & Co was engaged to design and facilitate the inaugural Brimbank Leadership Network (BLN) Day. This new cohort was made up of 120 leaders and included the Executive Management Team, Supervisors, Team Leaders and Coordinators.

Zing & Co partnered with Brimbank to co-design an engaging full-day session in March 2022 to build connection, alignment and develop leadership capability across the network.

Following the success of the inaugural BLN Day, Zing & Co was engaged to design and facilitate quarterly sessions ongoing whilst simultaneously building internal capability to take on both the design and facilitation aspects of the program. In September 2024 the program was officially handed over to Brimbank to run independently.

The seven BLN sessions facilitated by Zing & Co focussed on the following areas:

  • Organisational strategy and design

  • Employment engagement feedback and action planning

  • Defining and living shared values and behaviours

  • Leadership capability building

  • Building resilience

  • Cultural awareness

Over the period that Zing & Co facilitated the BLN Days, participation was consistently high, and leaders felt increasingly connected to one another. This made them feel better equipped to lead the change required under the new organisational strategy.

Through this work we helped build connection, alignment and leadership capability across a network of 120 leaders charged with delivering the organisational vision for the City of Brimbank.

What you can learn from this organisation

Success of a new organisational strategy relies on leaders’ ability to affect organisational change.

Leadership of long-term change must be driven by all parts of the organisation. It is imperative that leaders have the capabilities required to execute and engage key stakeholder groups in the action planning process to create buy-in and ownership.
